7 Essential Medications for the Dental Office

Dr. Malamed
Dr. Stanley Malamed, the HealthFirst Medical Advisory Board, and other Key Opinion Leaders recommend that seven medications form the base of any emergency medical kit in order to address the most common emergencies that occur in the dental office. All HealthFirst emergency medical kits include these 7 Essential Medications:

1

Epinephrine

Epinephrine 1:1000

Epinephrine is the only medication that can stop an anaphylactic reaction. The pre-filled auto-injector is the easiest and most reliable way to provide an intramuscular injection – even through a patient’s clothes. We recommend one adult-dose and one pediatric-dose auto-injector.

To treat a bi-phasic anaphylactic reaction, injectable epinephrine 1:1000 should be on-hand as a backup. We recommend at least two (2) 1mL ampules.

2

Diphenhydramine

Diphenhydramine (Benadryl)

Diphenhydramine is used to treat non-life-threatening allergic reactions. It may be administered as an intramuscular injection, oral tablet or powder.

3

Asprin

Asprin

Aspirin is administered as part of the MONA* protocol when myocardial infarction is suspected. It is available as an oral tablet or powder.

* Morphine, Oxygen, Nitrates and Aspirin to treat MI.

4

Nitroglycerin

A coronary vasodilator used to provide relief from angina. Nitroglycerin is administered as a lingual tablet or spray.

5

Albuterol

Albuterol

An albuterol inhaler is used treat an asthmatic attack.

6

Ammonia Inhalants

Ammonia Inhalants

Ammonia inhalants assist in improving consciousness for people who have fainted (syncope).

7

Glucose

Glucose

Oral glucose gel is used to treat diabetic or hypoglycemic patients during a blood-sugar-related emergency.

Also

Naxolone and Flumazenil

Reversal Agents for Conscious-Sedation-Related Emergencies

Naxolone is an opiate antagonist administered as an intramuscalar injection. Flumazenil is a benzodiazepine reversal agent administered intravenously.
