The Colorado Dental Board is considering a proposal to increase the training requirement for dentists seeking a minimal sedation permit—from the current 16 hours to 17 hours. This proposed change is designed to strengthen patient safety by ensuring that dental professionals administering minimal sedation have comprehensive, up-to-date training.
Currently, Colorado dentists must complete a minimum of 16 hours of training to obtain a minimal sedation permit. The proposed increase would align the state’s requirements more closely with American Dental Association (ADA) guidelines, which also recommend 16 hours. By adjusting to 17 hours, the Board is signaling its commitment to maintaining high standards and staying ahead of evolving best practices in dental sedation.
In addition to the initial training, Colorado dentists who hold any anesthesia or sedation permit are required to complete 17 hours of continuing education (CE) related specifically to sedation or anesthesia administration over the five-year permit period. These CE hours can also count toward the general CE requirements for dental license renewal.
Dental professionals should stay informed about these proposed changes and take steps to meet any updated requirements. Staying current with sedation training is essential for maintaining licensure and delivering safe, effective patient care.
