Each kit also included a copy of The Anaphylaxis Strike!, a new children’s book written by Thomas Silvera, Co-Founder and Vice President of the Elijah-Alavi Foundation. The book educates families and children about food allergies and anaphylaxis in an accessible and empowering way. HealthFirst was honored to be joined by Silvera, who participated in the event and shared his powerful story and ongoing commitment to saving lives through food allergy awareness and advocacy.

The Story of Elijah and the Creation of the Elijah-Alavi Foundation
The Elijah-Alavi Foundation was born from a deeply personal and heart-wrenching event: the loss of his son, Elijah-Alavi Silvera. Elijah tragically lost his life due to an anaphylactic reaction after exposure to an allergen at his childcare center. This profound loss galvanized the establishment of the foundation, with a resolute mission to ensure the safety and well-being of children with severe food allergies and asthma within educational settings. In part due to the foundation’s work, Elijah’s Law has passed in six states, ensuring that daycares have policies in place so that the staff is properly trained to prevent and respond to anaphylaxis emergencies and that epinephrine is readily available on site for treatment.

Silvera’s presence, which included an education program before the kit-packing contest, was a meaningful reminder of the importance of education and preparedness in protecting children with life-threatening allergies. As part of their commitment to saving lives, HealthFirst is partnering with the Elijah-Alavi Foundation to spread awareness, expand education, and increase access to epinephrine auto-injectors in schools and childcare facilities.
