The most common patient medical emergency in a dental office is hypoglycemia. Over 1 in 10 Americans who have routine dental visits are unaware that they're at risk for prediabeteres or diabetes.

Your Response Matters

A patient with hypoglycemia or diabetic distress can occur in any clinic at any time. It's important to know exactly which medication to grab and how to appropriately respond.

Position comfortably—usually upright preferred.

Ensure the patient is in a comfortable position before proceeding.

Administer Oral Carbohydrate.

Administer InstaGlucose inside of the mouth between the cheek and the gums. If available, allow the patient to sip on orange juice.

Permit recovery.

If patient remains conscious and alert, allow them to recover at their own pace. If patient loses consciousness, proceed to the tab labeled Patient is Unconscious.

Position supine with feet elevated slightly.

For dentists, you may keep the patient seated if in a dental chair. In all cases, position them supine with their feet elevated.

Contact EMS.

Before beginning any procedures, contact EMS immediately.

Provide oxygen.

Deliver oxygen at a rate of 15 liters per minute to the patient.

Do not administer oral carbohydrate.

Avoid putting anything into the unconscious victim’s mouth.

Monitor and record patient vital signs.

Check important vital signs, including BP, O₂ saturation, and respiratory rate.
