Getting Started with a Portable Oxygen System

It is important to have access to a portable oxygen system with positive pressure capabilities that can reach a patient regardless of location. It is also important to check the system on a regular basis.

Step 1: Securing the Oxygen Tank

The first step is to ensure the oxygen tank is tightly secured in the cart. Tighten the screw on the mounting ring to keep the tank in place. This precaution:

  • Protects the tank from falling, preventing damage or injury.
  • Complies with OSHA regulations, which require cylinders to be properly secured.

Step 2: Checking Expiration Dates

Oxygen Expiration: Look for the expiration date on the sticker at the top of the tank. The oxygen should be within three years of the stated expiration date.

Tank Inspection: Check the stamped date on the metal tank. Tanks must be inspected every five years.

Tip: Record these dates and track them using a compliance tool or a system like OnTraq to avoid missing any key deadlines.

Step 3: Installing the Regulator

  1. Align the regulator with the tank.
  2. Insert the two pins into the corresponding holes.
  3. Tighten the regulator securely.

Once installed, the regulator is ready for use.

Step 4: Connecting the Bag Valve Mask

  1. Locate the metal nipple underneath the regulators
  2. Snap the green end of the bag valve mask onto the nipple.
  3.

Step 5: Turning the Tank On and Monthly Checks

  1. Open the tank valve. A fully charged tank will show the needle moving from red to green.

Perform a monthly check:

  1. Open the tank valve.
  2. Adjust the regulator to release all remaining oxygen.
  3. Close the tank valve.

Step 6: Using Supplemental Oxygen Devices (Optional)

If supplemental oxygen is required, use either the nasal cannula or oxygen hood. Connect them to the same location where the bag valve mask’s green end is attached.
