Changes Coming for Alabama Dentists: New Sedation Training & Certification Requirements

SHARE

Starting October 1, 2025, Alabama dentists who administer oral conscious sedation will be required to maintain an Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support (ACLS) certification. This mandate, established by the Alabama Board of Dental Examiners, aims to enhance patient safety during sedation procedures. Dentists specializing in pediatric care will have the option to substitute a Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) certification for the ACLS requirement.1

In addition to the ACLS or PALS certification, dentists will be required to complete a minimum of 16 hours of training in oral conscious sedation. This training can be obtained through an American Dental Association-accredited postgraduate general dentistry or specialty residency program that includes specific instruction in oral conscious sedation.2

These updated regulations also stipulate that dentists with an active oral conscious sedation permit must complete at least two hours of continuing education related to sedation and/or anesthesia annually. All dental professionals will be required to maintain their current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification and complete annual training in infectious disease control and ethical considerations in dental practice.3

These measures are designed to ensure dental practitioners in Alabama are well-prepared to manage potential emergencies associated with sedation, ultimately prioritizing patient health and safety.
