How to Administer Epinephrine from an Ampule or Vial

Emergency Medications

Best practice for treating anaphylaxis is to administer epinephrine via an epinephrine auto-injector, according to HealthFirst Medical Advisory Board Member Dr. Stanley Malamed and the American Dental Association (ADA). However, some times you may need to know how to administer an epinephrine injection from an ampule or vial. Examples could be if the patient has a biphasic reaction, or if an auto-injector is not available at that moment.

Drawing up epinephrine from a vial or ampule isn’t always intuitive, so we recommend regularly reviewing and practicing. For hands-on practice, we recommend Wallcur’s Practi-Vial products as well as their puncture pad to practice drawing up and administering an injection with sterile water instead of using live drugs.
